I just had someone point out that Final Fantasy II is basically fantasy Star Wars and. it really is.

Very whimsical as battle music goes, but then the Dragon Quest (/Dragon Warrior) series is whimsical in general! I like how emphatic it starts out, then transitioning into a fairly slow-paced melody (for battle music anyway), without losing its forward momentum.
This series is new to us, so I don't know that much about any callbacks to previous entries or anything, unfortunately.
