oof. thermal stuff is hard.

how do you get rid of 510 watts from something when you only have 55°C of headroom and want to not have to pay for liquid cooling equipment?

We might have to pay for liquid cooling equipment....

Sometimes it's kind of amazing how absurdly cheap some things are

like, have you ever wanted ten thousand resistors? you can get that for just $11 and change digikey.com/product-detail/en/

what do you mean you've never wanted ten thousand resistors

the inductors alone are probably going to add another several hundred to it

Currently designing a thing for work. It's not even done yet and the BOM is already more than we make in a month D:

Rainbow Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus deglupta) trees, native to Southeast Asia, look like something from a fairytale. Their beautiful trunks are a result of how their bark grows.

As the trees grow, they shed flakes of bark, revealing bright green, young bark underneath. Slowly, this fresh bark ages and fades though a variety of colours – blue, purple, pink, orange, and finally a dark maroon colour. This final dark coloured bark falls away, repeating the cycle.

hmm. six pm and we haven't eaten anything all day. we should fix that

Going through some of the old xkcd what-ifs. I love the writer's sense of humor.

"Everyone fires 500-terawatt lasers at the moon. The moon leaves." is one of the best alt-texts I've seen, ever. (this was after an extensive discussion of what would happen if everyone fired indestructible 500-terawatt lasers at the moon, including talk of laser ablation propulsion and the definition of a planet)

does anyone else ever just randomly have a craving for a specific food from a specific chain restaurant that doesn't have a location in your city?

there's a lot of "boost this post and I'll X" posts out there so let me try one:

Boost this post and I'll do absolutely nothing special.

Multiferret! No, no real reason, just thought it'd be fun.

@daylight it _also_ minimizes stray magnetic fields, just as a bonus

How was your day today? Ours was filled with Magnetics.

If you liked Ursus arctos arctos (the Eurasian brown bear, or bear bear bear), you might also like the bogue, a fish native to the eastern Atlantic, whose species is Boops boops.

Horrible idea:

PCB Litz wire, braided across a multilayer pcb

especially when you need the inductance to be fairly flat with DC bias, because you need to operate anywhere from zero to a hundred amperes output

the problem I suppose is that high inductance (and in this context, 32μH is high) and high current capacity just don't mix well

mag-inc.com/Media/Magnetics/Da these are the cores, if anyone cares. Sintered metal powder, because ferrite just doesn't cut it

they'll be operating at about 5% saturation, which means their inductance won't change much over the full range of currents this thing is designed for

plus we also already have the welding cable. it's really nice welding cable too, super flexible and has a nice 190 ampere current rating, almost double what we actually need to use it for
