there are a number of jokes about a (presumably drunk) person talking to a police officer and saying "ossifer" instead of officer. It occurs to me that this is actually a proper formation from classical roots; ossifer could mean "bone-bearer", which would make it an appropriate term to call any vertebrate.

I've told my own students how programming conventions are about appreciating reading code and not about making it easier to write, and my frustration at CS curriculum that "doesn't teach you how to read, yet grades you on your poetry" twitter.com/leftoblique/status

apparently the composer Erik Satie (famous for his Gymnopedies) wrote a piece of music called Vexations that has, at the beginning, instructions on how best to prepare oneself to play the piece 840 times in a row. Nowhere is there any actual indication that anyone would ever want to do this, but the instructions are there just in case anyone does.
