apparently electronic devices in the UK used to be sold without plugs on them? Interesting. I don't think that was ever much of a thing in the US, but maybe we're just not old enough to remember it.

it makes sense that they didn't, they were expensive and didn't hold as much as CDs, but still.

I wonder if anyone ever had in-car record players.... you'd only be able to play it while stopped

Show thread

imagine if every in-car audio format had remained in cars, and just accumulated more and more different tape decks and optical drives over time

Saba, 4-track, 8-track, cassette tape, CD, various flash memory devices (I'm pretty sure there have been cars that could play off an SD card)...

that'd be a cluttered dashboard

UK people out there: What exactly is "washing-up liquid"? is it just dish soap?

(and Riven is probably one of the best games of its era, if not one of the best of all time)

Show thread

did you know: the PS1 had a buuunch of games that came on multiple disks, from Xenogears's two disks, Final Fantasy 7 on three, Final Fantasy 9 on four disks... but there were games that came on even more disks than that! We recently (about a month ago) picked up a copy of Riven on PS1 for the sheer novelty of having a game on _five_ disks--we'd previously thought that nothing had ever been released for the system on more than four.

I kind of want a curta calculator but holy crap they're expensive

kind of jealous of the europeans and their SCART connectors. one connector for full component video plus audio, instead of having to deal with three or five RCA plugs whenever we want to swap between the PS2 and the Wii

it's always weird seeing new things that are different because it's just like, we've always taken it for granted that this is pronounced like this and then someone pronounces it like that and it seems strange and remarkable

today I learned that in british english, the word beta is pronounced /bitə/ instead of /betə/

assistance request, discussion of shitty living situations

So, uh, we desperately need help. There's a lot of stuff going on and I figure I'll go over it:

First, @pillowcat and I are currently living in a *shit* situation. It's a house that got like 1/10th of the way through a remodel and then abandoned, the toilet barely works, the hot water barely works, the floors are nasty. We can barely afford to eat b/c I'm disabled and haven't managed to get on disability yet, and Tess is having trouble job hunting. And it's REALLY hard for me to get medical supplies down here. We really, really want to get out of this situation and out of this state but we need enough money to eat and on top of it some padding to allow Tess to go job hunt in the area we want to move to.

Secondly, my GFs, @Tryn and @Siruco are currently in the process of getting kicked out of their house. They have nowhere to go besides to a similarly shitty situation that'd put them well away from all of their support systems and any chance of getting back out. So we want to get them in with us in a better situation, but first Tess and I have to be in a good enough situation to help that happen. Please, please help. paypal.me/nautilee every lil bit helps, and please please boost this around. We're all pretty desperate.

privileged things (+?)

Talked to our dad about wanting to get a hybrid or electric vehicle (we've mentioned this desire several times before) and asked for advice on how to save up money for one and his response was "why don't you go to local dealers and look at used ones, I'll help you buy one if it's something you feel strongly about"

so uh, probably going to go to a carmax today and ask to see some cars

this is kind of sudden and not what I was expecting to happen
