we learned the other day that even Tolkien himself wasn't sure which towers the title "The Two Towers" referred to

There are about five towers that play a major role in the story of that book

i wonder why they don't use boron nitride in tools, is it too hard to shape?
-F

Show thread

i guess they might mean it has a hardened edge or something because hardened steel has a higher carbon content but i think it's just marketing nonsense going off of the hardness of tungsten carbide and silicon carbide
-F

Show thread

apparently some tool companies market their tools as being "iron carbide"

you... do know that's just steel right

@Zest @anna "dragon-flavored bird" is honestly a really good way to describe a phoenix

i'm curious, have you ever used thread-locking fluid?

from context i would assume bailey's irish cream is some kind of alcoholic drink because why the hell else would donuts need to be labelled non-alcoholic
-F

Show thread

we now have a box of specifically *non-alcoholic* donuts

which we got purely for the novelty of having donuts labelled non-alcoholic. we have no idea what this "bailey's irish cream" that they're flavored like tastes like but i mean come on when do you see donuts labelled as non-alcoholic

we've never seen alcoholic donuts in our life

apparently it's not as commonly known as we'd thought that diamond is actually an absurdly good thermal conductor, so now you know that too!

few things are known that have a higher thermal conductivity than diamond, among them are graphene and, as long as the crystal is relatively defect-free (which is actually *really difficult*), boron arsenide

-F

dymalloy is a really neat thing

it's an alloy of 20% copper, 80% silver, and <1% tiny diamonds dispersed through it

It's absurdly expensive but it also has among the highest thermal conductivity of anything workable at over 400 W/m·K, even higher than pure copper

it's about ½ to ⅓ as conductive as pure diamond but a) pure diamond is orders of magnitude more absurdly expensive than dymalloy and b) it's not workable, you can't machine it

After revealing itself though, it *can* capture pieces of *either* color, but no longer follows the commands of its disguise color. the fact that it can only move as its disguise color is to prevent a game from starting out with one king effectively in check

i guess it also can't reveal itself by taking the king because that would just be rude
