we have been playing through tales of zestiria out of curiosity and we are learning more and more why people consider this game Bad

that is, people putting the word "carbide" on stuff that's just plain steel to make it seem more attractive (because people assume that it would mean either tungsten carbide or boron carbide)

you know, you could technically claim that any steel tool is made of "carbide", given that steel is a mixture of carbides of iron

i wonder how common that is

the very concept of a ramset is a little amusing

extremely obscure reference used to make a bad joke

if programming languages have NaN, how do you get TisoN?

this is not true of alloy steels (meaning steels that contain significant amounts of stuff other than carbon and iron) by the way. stainless steels in particular can have less than 50% iron in them with the sheer amount of chromium and nickel and stuff that's added

but carbon steels are purer iron than cast iron or wrought iron

i like whenever this shows up in my youtube recommendations because of the sheer absurdity of someone having a favorite liquid carcinogen

and also because like most of nilered's videos it's a pretty interesting one

I don't know when it happened exactly but it was not very long after the requirement that people use TSA locks on luggage and ever since, the locks are practically as useful as a zip tie--holds your luggage closed while it's getting bumped around on the conveyor belts, but literally anyone can get into it with basically no effort

the story behind how the TSA managed to leak all seven of the master keys for TSA locks practically before they started rolling out the locks is kind of hilarious honestly

a news website was doing an article on it, asked either the TSA or a lock manufacturer that was contracted with them or something like that for photos to use with the article... and they got sent a high-resolution image of all seven keys, and no one thought "wait you can just copy the keys with this image"

wrought iron and cast iron are both extremely high-carbon alloys, because lots of carbon ends up in the iron as it's worked (just from the heat source, typically a flame from burning some carbon based fuel) unless you take care to remove it

if you manage the carbon content properly though, a small amount of carbon strengthens iron a lot (where a large amount weakens it)

it feels weird to us that steel is the alloy and iron is the pure metal, but stuff sold as "steel" is generally purer iron than stuff sold as "iron"
