oh yeah

why does everyone know the thing about tomatoes actually being a fruit, and people get into arguments over it, but no one ever brings up the other fruits that are used more like vegetables, like
- peppers
- cucumbers (a type of melon)
- squash and pumpkins (types of berry)
- the other type of pepper
- okra

Please suggest: instances with non-white admins or mods

I would like to be able to make recommendations to BIPOC who have been scared off by the (non)moderation of mastodon.social and some of the other bigger instances.

If you know of an instance where there are non-white people who are doing the moderation (and also that the moderation is good) please let me know.

Thank you, comrades! <3

we're reading a book about how machine translation works using the example of when the author put the script of final fantasy IV through google translate, both before and after they switched to a neural network translation model in 2016

seeing all the absurdities that came of that makes me want to see someone who's never played final fantasy iv play the machine translated version and see if they can ever work out what the hell is going on

in the majority of final fantasy games, blue mages just have to be hit by the attack to learn it (which leads to some interesting difficulty getting healing magic from enemies, as they don't use it on you normally)

but then you have final fantasy ix, where quina just learns enemy abilities by just straight-up eating them

Other tools in this category (at least for those of us who don't have jobs or hobbies that mean we use them everyday): Screwdrivers with the weird bits, a level, a kill-a-watt or equivalent, a sewing kit, a battery tester (specifically a battery tester, not a multimeter), certain software tools like shapecatcher.com/

There are some tools that you almost never need, but when you *do* need them, they're indispensable.

Today's discovery: we don't actually have a stapler at the moment.

random thought: supposedly jesus (the christian son-of-god one) was a carpenter, so were there ever any chairs or dressers or tables that were claimed to be his work? if so, why do you never hear about them? if not, why not?

you ever just think about how the english translation of aria of sorrow made soma a high school student, despite the fact that plot reasons mean his birthday *has* to be in 1999 and the game takes place in 2035, making him 36?

The "lucky 10,000" mindset (xkcd.com/1053/) is a much more positive and helpful way of thinking about things than the "how do you not know that?" mindset. try to make people part of today's lucky 10,000, not just belittle them for not knowing things!

it's one of those things that you never generally think there would be a word for but actually there is and when you know there's a word for it it's obvious there would be a word for that, just not something people generally think about that much. unless you work in the textile industry probably

incidentally, if you didn't know, pilling is what it's called when fabric develops those little balls of thread on its surface! it just kind of happens over time, mostly from rubbing against things. some fabrics are more prone to it than others.
