A female Malaysian blue-banded kingfisher (Alcedo peninsulae). At first glance, she could easily be mistaken for a common kingfisher, with her rufous underparts and conspicuous white neck-flash. In 2019 I spent a month in SE Asia, during which I spent a week in Vietnam, at Cuc Phuong National Park to be exact. We were hiking a trail up in the hills one night when one of my friends spotted this Mossy Frog (Theloderma corticale) in a small tree, one of those species you hope to see but don’t harbor any expectations. It turned out to be one of five species of anurans encountered in maybe a ten meter stretch of trail. An unforgettable experience. #frogs #amphibians #herps #herpetology

I was sure this was a leaf beetle (Chrysomelidae) when I photographed it in Panama.

But no. It's actually a darkling beetle (Tenebrionidae) in the genus Nilio. Beetles never cease to... they just never cease. There are far too many of them.

Flank steak!

I dried it, rubbed it with melted Wagyu A5 fat, then salted; put under the broiler for 4 minutes per side, then left to rest 10 minutes.

Served over rice, a side of caraway pickled cabbage (made by @Supership79, our resident picklemeister), topped with a sinfully bright and delicious persillade (minced parsley, garlic, lemon zest, capers, scallions, ginger, oil, salt, spices)--like a French chimichurri.

Not tender, but delicious.

A riff on the Croque Madame: had two hard-boiled eggs to use up, so they took the roof.

Bread (potato-scallion loaf) and ham both store bought, sadly.

The cheese is my truffle-gruyere "processed" cheese (still using that up). The béchamel I broiled on top had duxelles added, for another burst of mushroom.

On the side, Japanese-style home-pickled cabbage.

Dessert? Financiers!
