One of the primary visual references for #BrightOak is the town of #SanJuanBautista in California-- so in honor of #thicktrunktuesday here is an absolutely glorious old #peppertree growing alongside the main road 💚

"Honey, are you sure it's a good idea to plant a giant sequoia right next to the house?" Baby sequoia (only 100 years old), gonna be big someday. It's at the bottom of a ravine and towers above trees at the top. #ThickTrunkTuesday #Seattle

Jocelyn Bell Burnell transformed astronomy #OTD in 1967 when she made the first observation of a pulsar.
She and advisor Antony Hewish initially dubbed the object LGM-1 (“Little Green Men”) for its regular signal, but soon identified it as a rotating, magnetized neutron star.
My TAs and I get to grade about 80 partial short stories every 3 weeks or so, thanks to me having assigned far too much work as I field-test this particular course for the first time. But one delightful thing I'm noticing is how often these undergrad students put #trans or gender non-binary characters into their stories who are just being; accepted by their peers and parents, nobody struggling with their pronouns, no big deal. The future of #fiction is looking good!
dude DUDE DUUUUUDE! an actual possible panjegan! The Sassanians used to use something to shoot five arrows at once and nobody knows what they looked like.

So my account here on mastodon.social is temporary. here's what I'm looking for in a permanent instance:
1) Not too big, but not too small. i want longterm viability. the local feed should be active but not a firehose.
2) doesn't have to be run by furries / lgtbq but must be friendly to them
3) A personal preference, i don't want the name to be too goofy and shouldn't include "mastodon"
4) It should federate as widely as it can and not get too wrapped up in internal strife

For my #startrek folks: Will Burrows, who makes great Trek stickers and other merch, is having a sale on his site: https://willburrowsart.com/. He's the creator of one of my favorite stickers:
While following a lot of people can populate your Home feed significantly, sometimes people (like me) end up boosting a lot and that can unexpectedly hinder your own experience.
So if you like someone's specific posts and don't want to follow their boosts, you can go to their profile under the [...] button, and select the "Hide boosts from account" button.
There is no algorithm on Mastodon. You have ownership and control over every filtering decision instead of some robot.
Hundreds of ancient gold coins stolen from German museum in under 10 minutes, officials say
I’m going to actively defend the idea of drag story hour here (initially I didn’t see the point). Kids get to see an adult not just enjoy dressing up, but go through the trouble of dressing up special to read to *them*. That’s pretty affirming stuff. And it’s sad to see that under siege from a presentation of adults as self righteous angry voices eager to punish.
