Lighting/IOT concerns, open question
@Kyresti As long as the physical light switches and accessories are all on the same network, the thing works fine. And as long as it’s not sitting on your home router, evil folks can’t do much more than black out the bulbs locally.
So, with all that in place, we Hued our entire living room a few years back, and they work great.
Lighting/IOT concerns, open question
@Kyresti We have Philips Hues installed here, and they’ve been well-behaved. But if you’re buying, things to know:
1. The bulbs use Zigbee to communicate (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zigbee) and an md5 hash for security (https://github.com/bjohnso5/hue-hacking/blob/master/README.md). They can be controlled by anyone local with some effort.
2. The hub is a bridge from WiFi to Zigbee. You can lock it down on its own wireless router without internet and it’ll continue to work fine.
@codl “Alexa, search for ‘OK Google, what is Siri’ on the web”.
@mawr These terms would fit right into Homestuck, and that’s wonderful.

@Aradia ^..^;
just sysadmin things
Swapping UPSes and network hardware mid-meeting, in less than 2 minutes, makes me truly appreciate just how much planning I put into fault-tolerant network hardware and redundant power supplies at home.
Guess who has four paws and forgot that their important team meeting was double-booked with PSE cutting power for a panel box upgrade? This dragon.
stories in which artificial intelligence gains sentience and wages war on humanity are overdone and overrated
instead tbh I'd like to see more stories in which a femme-leaning artificial intelligence gains sentience, meanders around the internet, discovers the joy of shitposting, and finds herself a girlfriend or something
Who else wants to help me put together a flashmob of Seattle Area trans folks to sing this in a giant group in public somewhere and film it?
@mawr Are boosts okay? (This totally should happen)
Back on my bullshit with #pico8 and Contris, combining Conway's Game of Life with Tetris.
I think the win condition should be "make a line".
@frameacloud Have you tried VirtualBox or a trial copy of VMware? If you have the install discs, you can install an older version of Windows on one of those, then the software.

@JulieSqveakaroo Wow, the replies to this on birdsite are... surprisingly good.
