re: My house almost burned down yesterday!

@mawr Recommendations sent! (For those reading, we used ECO Electric out here.)

Also, neutral*, not ground neutral (which is not a real thing). Silly editing.

My house almost burned down yesterday!

@mawr Yikes!

Also... same. We fried ground neutral here back in December, after someone visiting put a space heater on one of the only ungrounded lines in our house. Thankfully, it shorted gracefully.

Ours is a ‘68 construction, so similar wiring plan. We upgraded the lines, panel box, and added a surge protector to the house line.

Good news is I can recommend a company to do this work for you?

@salameleon@snouts.online 2:29 is a pretty good time for getting confused by a seed, based on the LttPR games I’ve watched in the past.

Also, I had no idea death and fairies took priority over the fall animation. Neat.

Lighting/IOT concerns, open question

@Kyresti As long as the physical light switches and accessories are all on the same network, the thing works fine. And as long as it’s not sitting on your home router, evil folks can’t do much more than black out the bulbs locally.

So, with all that in place, we Hued our entire living room a few years back, and they work great.

Lighting/IOT concerns, open question

@Kyresti We have Philips Hues installed here, and they’ve been well-behaved. But if you’re buying, things to know:

1. The bulbs use Zigbee to communicate (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zigbee) and an md5 hash for security (github.com/bjohnso5/hue-hackin). They can be controlled by anyone local with some effort.

2. The hub is a bridge from WiFi to Zigbee. You can lock it down on its own wireless router without internet and it’ll continue to work fine.

@codl “Alexa, search for ‘OK Google, what is Siri’ on the web”.

Every one of you is precious and wonderful and unique and necessary and deserving of life and love and peace.

Anything your brain does to try to convince you otherwise is a mean trick.

Please try to remember this. Remember it unceasingly.

@mawr These terms would fit right into Homestuck, and that’s wonderful.

silly, dragons

It’s no surprise some dragons work in tech, since they’re very good at scaling.

The folks rewiring the electrical to my home aren’t quite as enthusiastic as that one construction crew from the latest Zelda, but their banter through the walls sure comes close.

IoT things, digital security

I wasn’t canceling service with this unnamed IoT company because of data security (I take precautions at the network level). But after this email response, I sure am now.

just sysadmin things

Swapping UPSes and network hardware mid-meeting, in less than 2 minutes, makes me truly appreciate just how much planning I put into fault-tolerant network hardware and redundant power supplies at home.

Guess who has four paws and forgot that their important team meeting was double-booked with PSE cutting power for a panel box upgrade? This dragon.

stories in which artificial intelligence gains sentience and wages war on humanity are overdone and overrated :blobthinking:

instead tbh I'd like to see more stories in which a femme-leaning artificial intelligence gains sentience, meanders around the internet, discovers the joy of shitposting, and finds herself a girlfriend or something

Who else wants to help me put together a flashmob of Seattle Area trans folks to sing this in a giant group in public somewhere and film it?
