covid-adjacent, uspol, longish

after this is all over, be sure to remind people, as often as they'll allow you to get away with it, that:

  • telecoms did not need data caps, had plenty of capacity to donate to low-income folks, and were never in danger of going bankrupt because of the lack of data caps or the additional usage

  • folks who work on computers all day can do that wherever computers are; most tech offices are merely trophies to show off to other tech offices.

  • the government wasn't concerned with helping people, it was concerned with helping business. it was people who were helping people and often the government merely got in the way of that.

  • trillions of dollars was found to allocate as soon as they wanted to; every time anyone asks how anything will be funded it's merely to shut down the conversation.

keep a running list of your favorite facts and get them in front of as many folk as you can, as often as you can, and maybe, just maybe, we can get more folks on board for change

There's a whole class of weird US court cases against inanimate objects:

United States v. Approximately 64,695 Pounds of Shark Fins
United States v One Solid Gold Object In The Form Of A Rooster

I decided to see what a neural net would make of them.

Seattle Area: COVID-19 Grocery/Supply Mutual Aid! [1/2]

For those in our Seattle & greater Seattle-adjacent communities who need some extra help weathering this pandemic for any reason, a group currently going by the name of "COVID-19 Mutual Aid" is rapidly forming to help match requests for aid with volunteer efforts.

The following message is copied in full (with some modification) from the "COVID-19 Mutual Aid - Seattle" Facebook group. The original is available here:

back in 2015 some researchers came up with an e-ink display device which was powered entirely by harvesting joules from the NFC connection your phone used to talk to it, and I’m honestly kind of shocked these aren’t all over the place now? alansonsample.com/research/NFC

covid-19, preparedness, uncomfortable science

I don't want to interpret more from these data, since not much is known at this point and people are afraid right now.

My own conclusions for now, re, what I can control beyond medical preparedness: consider skipping large gatherings and travel, even if it's majorly disruptive and reported cases are still low, until adequate testing is available. And please have a plan in place, both for illness and in case major con travel gets disrupted.

covid-19, preparedness, uncomfortable science

Takeaways from my reading of it:

1. Asymptomatic cases are primarily responsible for community spread.
2. There is a lag time of up to two weeks between figures being reported and the number of cases in the wild.
3. When accounting for clusters and other factors, morbidity rate from illness is closer to 0.5-0.9%.
4. However, that rate is much higher when medical facilities are overrun by severe cases.

covid-19, preparedness, uncomfortable science

Despite the alarmist URI and use of crude extrapolation methods (clustering, simplified mathematical models without more available data), this is the best explainer I've seen so far on how to interpret data from media reports and what to expect the spread and impact of covid-19 to look like: medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronav

apparently "swords are stronger when they're forged by the light of the full moon" is an actual real thing that made swords more durable and this might be the chuuniest fact i have learned in 2020 so far

I should also point out that I regularly participate in multiworld games with these fine snoots, and that you can also watch my own antics over at twitch.tv/goldkindrake

synththoughts

imagining a synth that has floaty hardlight limbs as a workaround for weaknesses in her hardlight generators

basically they're really good at exerting force relative to themselves / her body (pushing up from the ground, pulling or pushing on things) but a bit sucky at dealing with... making hardlight surfaces and constantly dealing with stuff like interactions with air - it's possible but drains power quickly, the more surface and volume the quicker

so she just has really simple floatylimb holograms to use as little power as possible while indicating where her hardlight generators are currently "working" (so someone doesn't wander a limb into there and get shoved or something) and a simple pawprint shaped actual hard surface at the end.

If they're a crow, they're pretty big. Those are full scale cinder blocks to scale, and it appears to be about 1/3 meter tall when standing?
