A possibly related phenomenon is called crown shyness – certain species of trees will very politely avoid overshadowing each other in a forest canopy, leaving gaps between each others' branches.
Mostly trees of the same species will do this, but different species of tree have been observed doing this too.
Again, no one's entirely sure how the trees do this, and some botanists are probably arguing about it somewhere right now.

In a game that is 95% about things being loud and shooty, someone decided “what if we made this into a nature documentary that you can play”, and I think that is wonderful.
Don't forget to take care of the beacons of happiness in your community.
And the people who are there to cheer you up.
And the people who are there to listen to your ill.
They do need care too, but are often forgotten or overlooked, because they seem happy/strong/good. Truth is, they have their own struggles and if you don't take care if them, they are gone, eventually.
Been thinking ‘bout them c h a r r lately. So here are some studies of one of my dudes. Actually extremely happy about that foot study. I want to draw more cat monsters so I’m offering a small markdown on any commission that features charr in it! #GW2fanart #mastoart

Seattle Area: Winter Storm Warning Update
National Weather Service update on the upcoming storm (9:20am PST Feb 7th):
https://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=WAZ556&warncounty=WAC033&firewxzone=WAZ657&local_place1=2%20Miles%20S%20Redmond%20WA&product1=Winter+Storm+Watch&lat=47.6456&lon=-122.1283
TLDR: Expect snow accumulations of 5-10" falling mostly Friday night into Saturday morning, where strong winds (15-30 MPH with 40MPH gusts) will result in blizzard conditions.
Good news: The forecast temperature dropped enough that most precipitation should fall as snow instead of freezing rain (which would have guaranteed significant power outages).
winter storm prep tips
Suggestion to prep for things ahead of time:
Turn off your home's breakers (or individual rooms with the switches) and see what kinda food you're able to make, entertainment you're able to have, and if you can stay reasonably warm with blankets and other passive heating devices (or that you have wood to burn if you have a chimney).
This will help you identify gaps in your electrical outage preparation.
Some pointed questions:
- Can your oven run without electricity?
- Can your stove top run without electricity?
- Do you need a blender, dishwasher, electric coffee maker, toaster, or other wall-outlet-powered device in the course of your everyday life? Can you replace it with a non-electric equivalent temporarily (dishes by hand, toasting over the stove top, etc)?
- How often are you going to have to open your fridge to feed yourself?
- Do you have battery backups to charge your phone off of?
