Okay so 1976 rolls around and here’s Star Wars. A lived-in universe with planet destroyers and dirt farmers, and nowhere near Earth. It’s not a hugely groundbreaking story (it has some really nice character writing!), but it doesn’t have to be, it’s huge, it’s nothing we’ve seen. How do you make a sequel to that?
1980 gives us bounty hunters, probots, a Cloud City, the Imperial fleet, walkers, that awesome Rebel hanger which is an exercise in where to place gunk. =>

we find out Leia’s also a Skywalker and a potent Force user for good or evil... and it goes nowhere. She doesn’t rescue Luke or become his successor when he falls, like in the Dark Empire comics. The most compelling plot thing is Palpatine (and he rocks! Ian McDiarmid is one of the best things in the movie even within getting to see the galactic core!) offering a Faustian bargain, but it’s not a presented as a really juicy one.
So yeah, it really tanks by comparison.

Oh geez and ANOTHER thing that bugs me! You see these elite red-cloaked pike-wielding guards and they’re awesome, and then they DO BUGGER ALL. That fight in Last Jedi finally, finally does what the Imperial Guards should have done in Jedi, be a challenge for someone as badass as we’ve seen Luke become!

@Leucrotta The Red guard do bugger all cause they weren't there. Palps told them to bounce off and they did as they were told.

@kelseyhusky and I feel like storywise he shouldn’t, they should be like this test of how devastating Luke’s rage can be while Vader remains the “good cop,” or people Luke and Vader can be manipulated to fight together or something like that. If that makes sense?

@Leucrotta No, that does make sense, but that really isn't in keeping with the emperor's style. When there are witnessness about, he's usually not trying to be all seduce-y. Look at how he worked his wiles on Anakin. Always in private, or in situations where there is a reduced chance of being observed: His private opera box, his personal office Its the illusion of being given the attention of someone who cares about you. which is powerful to someone who feels alone

*Without* getting to see the Galactic Core rather. Imho Jedi would have been infinitely better if it’d had that Ralph McQuarry evil temple thing instead of just more Death Star with a really nice chair.
