For the longest time I thought “Turning Japanese” was about anime and since that wasn’t very well known in the 80s that’s kinda weird. Especially thanks to the line “everyone regards me as a psyched Lone Ranger” which I parsed as “cyclone ranger,” some sort of tokusatsu reference.

@KV1NN4 the big reason Barbie thinks about death - the thing that sets off her quest - is a human was thinking about it, and the ghost of Ruth Handler is VERY crucial to the story. That’s basically it. If you lost a grandmother, ESPECIALLY a Jewish one, within the last 3 decades, this movie will have you in tears (the movie made me miss someone very badly). Otherwise you’ll probably be okay.
