probably the biggest new thing I got from watching Dark Crystal stoned was really appreciating the storytelling with extracting/drinking essence. It rachets up threat - there really IS a fate worse than death - makes the Skeksis pretty irredeemable, but it's also an excuse to show you a young version of the Emperor so you really do get the sense these guys are an arthritic, fearful shadow of what they once were.
