It's important stuff up and down along the river. It's NOT fundamentally different from a European's map, it's the product of a fairly settled understanding of where you might want to go and the easiest means of getting there.

I'm mostly really stuck here, about how basically I was taught that I was dumb as a post, *and* being told that I was smart/gifted/bright/etc, but *only* in the context of how I needed to do/understand/resolve tasks (right up to the point that I failed, which served as proof of how fucking stupid I was), not as actual praise.
