perhaps surprisingly I sleep better when someone isn't running construction equipment across the street from my apartment

It's being a bad night as far as sleep goes. I really wish I could skip out on work later.

The MOB wanted the "BEANSTALK." They got SHAFT! Right up to HERE!

Another thing about Byzantine soldiers being religious; the Orthodox church doesn't give special permissions for killing for faith or Emperor, so Byzantines at war were doing some sort of low level penance (manuals of the time say keep it light so people still want to enlist).

So you can kinda see how an Emperor wanting troops he could easily assign to do whatever he wanted would like to have mercenaries who were Catholic, or before that, heathen.

Was reading about how the end of the day for Byzantine soldiers was marked by the Trisagion - so looked it up from curiosity, the version they had couldn't have sounded too different. Beautiful, even if I feel uncomfortable listening to a Christian hymn.

WWII stuff

After a while I stopped looking through a new (used) book of Wayne Reynolds art lest I just push through and miss some of how he handles making such compelling pictures. I swapped out and read right through a new (used) book about Allied armor in Normandy - really neat read, especially because a lot of Operations Epsom, Goodwood and the disastrous Villiers-Bocage engagement were more tank-heavy than Operation Cobra, and that's a way more British/Commonwealth view than I usually get.

tonight's dinner is "clear the freezer of these Szechuan flat dumplings and glutinous rice with red bean paste which I DESPERATELY WANTED;" fortunately, Szechuan flat dumplings and glutinous rice with red bean paste are incredibly good.

“Oh, so y’mean he’s out makin’ cioppino?”

The so called trolley problem, in which civic engineers could either send a trolley down one track which would serve a lot of lower income commuters, or down another track which serves only one/few well off people, and as a result Americans usually choose more cars on the road.

Nirvana’s “Dumb” is the same song as “Five O’clock World” by The Vogue, which is the same song as “Wild Sex in the Working Class” by Oingo Boingo, but “Dumb” and “Wild Sex in the Working Class” aren’t the same song.

"The 50 most banned books in America! These books have been banned in schools and libraries. Why?"

I'm gonna guess "Queers, Jews and Black people" but gonna do due diligence and read the article.

I'm wrong, it's "Queers, Blacks, female sexuality, and trying to help teenagers face grief or depressionin ways which aren't shove religion and football at them."

The Danish bakery has “Immigrant Song” on the speakers. Should I worry they’re gonna suddenly go berserk and start throwing ti birkes at deadly velocity or something?

Suggest that the Beasties’ “She’s Crafty” describes the same events as Prince’s “Darling Nikki,” but one is him bragging and the other is him kvetching to his friends.

The usual; if I push myself to draw maybe I’ll feel better but right now I just want to be a lump reading about Anglo Saxon England or something.

Threw money at some folks holding a Queer Jewish holiday market just because I like remembering that we have more to our identities than just stumbling between hate crimes.

fragmentary evidence suggests a "Legio LXIX Phallica" whose symbol (carried into battle by the signifier) was a crudely rendered human erection. Based on 1-4 c. graffiti this venerable unit must have served throughout the Empire, from Gaul to Anatolia!
