opinion about Club Q shooting - - -
If hypothetically I shot up a synagogue, and it happened to be on Yom HaShoah, guess what? IT'S A HATE CRIME. If my father works for a party historically full of Nazis and anti-semitic rhetoric, I shoot up a schul, then conveniently I discover Jewish roots I never had before, guess what? IT'S A HATE CRIME.
I know I said a media machine and an entire party make excuses for Kyle Rittenhouse sets up the next hate crime for which there will be a constant barrage of bullshit excuses; I'm sorry to have been proved right and I'm sure THIS little pissant will get off with a fucking slap on the wrist from another right wing judge. Maybe even a book deal.
I fucking wish I had the chance to take several good swings at him for what he did. I fucking wish I could take several good swings at any number of people.
Personal, recent hate crime
If something pisses me off this hard it’s hitting childhood nerves. Previously talk about the Q Club shooting merely upset me as another typical hate crime (solidarity deranged shooter narrative, taken alive by police, media finds a ridiculously safe angle, leftist gun rhetoric). Childhood didn’t include news of mass shootings, but it DID include Christian right wingers self righteous and happy about Gays dying.
The thing about Also Sprach Zarathustra; decades ago there was this kids’ educational show, The Electric Company. F’rex they had a little song about the -ly suffix. They had short cartoons; a 2001 styled monolith would appear then crumble to the tune of Also Sprach Zarathustra, revealing a letter combination like OO or ALK, and they’d pronounce it and show words that included it, like CHALK.
So when I got old enough to finally watch 2001, I was real surprised when the monolith *didn’t* crumble…
followed by once again, the theme tune to Shaft in Low Geosynchronous Orbit.
The MOB wanted the "BEANSTALK." They got SHAFT! Right up to HERE!

well, thanks to seeing art of uh, luridly outsized bits, it's time for the furry cockworship theme tune again.

Another thing about Byzantine soldiers being religious; the Orthodox church doesn't give special permissions for killing for faith or Emperor, so Byzantines at war were doing some sort of low level penance (manuals of the time say keep it light so people still want to enlist).
So you can kinda see how an Emperor wanting troops he could easily assign to do whatever he wanted would like to have mercenaries who were Catholic, or before that, heathen.
Was reading about how the end of the day for Byzantine soldiers was marked by the Trisagion - so looked it up from curiosity, the version they had couldn't have sounded too different. Beautiful, even if I feel uncomfortable listening to a Christian hymn.

WWII stuff
After a while I stopped looking through a new (used) book of Wayne Reynolds art lest I just push through and miss some of how he handles making such compelling pictures. I swapped out and read right through a new (used) book about Allied armor in Normandy - really neat read, especially because a lot of Operations Epsom, Goodwood and the disastrous Villiers-Bocage engagement were more tank-heavy than Operation Cobra, and that's a way more British/Commonwealth view than I usually get.
Lots of random gunk, but some drawings and cooking talk too. Obsesses about DnD and related topics. Left-leaning/profoundly frustrated politics. Black lives matter; trans rights are human rights.
