lately I've been getting back some more random memories. As usual most of them have been inane little details (a conversation in 6th grade, a harmonica) but ugh, I really did not need the ending to one of those HS health class films (you know the type; don't drink, don't drive, don't drink and drive, don't smoke, don't do drugs, don't have premarital sex).
I actually differ from a lot of Mastodonians in that I think capitalism has utility; but it’s still a crap shoot, and I think you can accept something has a huge component of luck without having to assign that luck a moral virtue (I might inherit diabetes, I grew up in the southeast pre-internet and I have green eyes, and all these kinda sorta happened without any reflection on my personal worth).
Another regret about me and the military. My parents really pushed college and my schools really pushed the Army, which just wasn’t me; what gets me is that if Navy had ever been suggested as an option I’d have probably gone that route. I mean... I could swim, or speak Russian, as a JOB? And as a kid I was all over anything that was a ship.
I think we try to jam capitalism into being about virtue because humans are pattern matching, like morality plays, and a more organic idea that you can do all the right things and lose big/win big entirely thanks to luck is terrifyingly close to acknowledging you yourself are a few steps from death.
Failing to acknowledge that a lot of it’s luck - that 35% or so at most is smarts, creativity and hard work - is what keeps us from having a better safety net in place for luck running out.
And a lot of it WASN'T good. Like I religiously read Dorothy L. Sayers and Dashiell Hammett, but I also read every Pern, Xanth or Shannara thing I could grab. I started on Tom Clancy but it was too UHMERICA HOOAH and not enough LET'S NERD OUT ABOUT M2 AFVS so I stopped quickly.
(This was before I got out on my own and spent a chunk of time reading LeGuin and also Mercedes Lackey.)
I have to be curious about what other varieties of total shit my peers here have read.
it's weird how as a kid I read like crazy (between poor, age, somewhat technophobe parents, and being ostracized), when I pick up and read books rarely now (when I do though I want to keep reading; I haven't burned out).
This mix of whatever was available and stuff I thought Smart People Must Like wound up being really patchy. Like I've read every Tarzan and Pellucidar story ever read, but my Dad didn't own any Barsoom stuff so I haven't read those.
racism, furry, sort of kink bashing
I gotta say one good thing about furry pornography is that with no humans, it gets away from positive (and negative) racial objectification. I can't be the only person who finds that really uncomfortable when looking at human porn.
Just show me cocks and cunts and semen all over the place without stereotyping Black people please.
Lots of random gunk, but some drawings and cooking talk too. Obsesses about DnD and related topics. Left-leaning/profoundly frustrated politics. Black lives matter; trans rights are human rights.
