When do i tell my therapist that I’m not human
(This is a gross exaggeration of how i would go about wording it to anyone with a lack of knowledge on the issue)
@orrery very fair :) thank you 💙💙 i’m fine working it in gradually. I’ve already told her that theres a lot of… nontraditional things about me and my identity so *shrugs* at this point it’s mostly about getting myself comfortable enough to say it, which i’m getting to ^^
@Oneironott If it's any reassurance, every local from our crowd who has told their therapist about their big-I Identity Issues has gotten a pretty good reception! Keet had pretty much spilled the beans about her Pony Issues to her therapist and she just kinda rolled it into their discussions.
I wouldn't say every therapist around here would be so positive, but the already queer-friendly ones seem pretty open, and just grateful to have one more metaphor to work with therapeutically...
@zebratron2084 my life is all about metaphor
Unrelatedly, it was awesome to finally meet you!
@Oneironott Yup, and while you might have to shop around for a bit, in my experience good liberal-minded therapists LOVE it when their patients come in with their own DIY identity toolkit! (And you too! Sorry I didn't come say hi in person much sooner but it's been a very hide-under-the-couch sort of year. :> )
@zebratron2084 Heey, very understandable. I'm still getting used to there being so MANY folks here that I want to spend time with. It's like a con, except I actually do eventually have the time to see everyone ;P
*Pulls the fire alarm*
@Oneironott How quickly do you want to get them down the rabbit hole? You could just go with "I'm not really human, biology notwithstanding, and I want to make sure that you're comfortable both with me saying it and asserting that it doesn't need to be fixed before we get too much further." If you want to walk them down from furry and otherkin to your own identity formation, you can, but I would think a good therapist would be able to hear that and say "okay, tell me how you identify instead."
