re: longpost // griping about sci-fi rocket engines

@pearshapes@snouts.online I thought you wanted to expand as much as possible, though? The exhaust velocity is determined mostly by the nozzle's pinch point, and then you expand outward to attempt to match the external pressure, which in vacuum means as much as possible.

We learned a new word today! Apparently, those little cups that restaurants give you condiments in are called ramekins. Technically the word refers specifically to ceramic ones, but it seems like a good word to use for the plastic or paper ones too.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online Then again, grape, banana, and watermelon-flavored candies typically taste nothing like their respective fruits, so it's also likely that it doesn't.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online Supposedly this is the plant that the flavoring is named after, so I would assume so.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online I think the problem is that while gmos are good, monsanto is bad, and quite a lot of gmos are owned by monsanto to the point that they sue farmers for copyright infringement just because some bees pollinated the farmer's tomatoes with some monsanto-owned strain of tomato.

It's a huge mess and there's a lot of nuance to it.

@monorail It took me a moment to realize you didn't mean BIOS. And this is after Felthry saw the same post and had the same momentary confusion!

@cozykaffe@snouts.online What exactly are wine gums, anyway? I understand they're a British candy, but are they just generic gummy candies or are they some specific type?

@cozykaffe@snouts.online They _are_ all feliform.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online Bat-eared foxes are so cute. 💙

@nautilee Oh, by "we" I mean me and Felthry, not the fediverse in general. Someone else should be able to give you more information.

@nautilee Apparently some third party used archive.org's tools to archive every public post on a mastodon instance that shut down. This was done without the consent or even knowledge of anyone on the instance. That's about all we know right now.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online We're 24, going to be 25 in two months and a day.

@BatElite @Nine The turbo button was someone's idea of making a virtue of necessity. A lot of older programs used the processor's own clock to time events, so if you were to take a game designed to run on a 10MHz processor and put it in your computer with a fancy new 100MHz processor, it would run at ten times the intended speed. The turbo button was the solution to this: turning it off would drop the clock speed down to something that was reasonable during that era, for using old programs. Turning it on would put the clock back to normal speed.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online What about making it where there's otherwise no way to take damage at all? That has potential for a new speedrun category: how quickly can you lose.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online Don't species usually diversify rapidly on islands?

re: A beautiful line

@Draekos That's a fantastic line.

@ashiinu@snouts.online An unpopular, but by no means bad, opinion. Oblivion was a good game.

@scoliwings That looks like an emoticon Felthry would use.

@Nine @cozykaffe@snouts.online A bit more practical as a weapon, I imagine a chainsaw or chainsaw-like device with sufficiently high-quality cutting bits would probably work to cut through plate armor, but it still wouldn't cut through quickly enough to actually get through the armor before the other person throws you off or just stabs you.
