@monorail B# is identical to C in modern 12-tone equal temperament, but they are distinct in other tuning systems.

re: thought train

@scoliwings Actually, the name Jesus is related to the name Joshua. I don't think the name Jess is directly related.

Apparently there are people who actually think that newton's third law doesn't exist and rocket motors don't work in a vacuum.

I don't understand how people get these absurd ideas that all of science is somehow fake.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online That's reasonable enough.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online Would you like a walkthrough of how to make it so you can just double-click jar files to open them with java? It won't take long.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online Assuming you're on windows, anyway.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online I think you want javaw.exe.

@Nine We prefer to avoid the epic store where possible. As bad as steam is, the epic store seems to be worse.

@Nine We don't have a PS4 or xbox one, so it'd have to be PC.

Hmm. I wonder why all the Fire Emblem representatives in Smash are sword-wielders. Playing as Eliwood with his spear would be interesting.

Are there any spear-based characters in Smash?

@Nine What system is it on? We might be interested in trying it.

We should probably play Journey sometime, too.

I just had the thought of making glass nails, and I feel like there's some artistic meaning to be had there, but I'm not sure what it is.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online I'm tempted to say thylacines, because they did not deserve what was done to them, but there are so many other species that I would want to see return too...

@cozykaffe@snouts.online That said, there are much worse things in such a closet than mercury. There are worse things used in educational chemistry labs every day!

Did you know that if you're ever working with fuming nitric acid, it's generally better to not wear gloves? fuming nitric acid will ignite most things gloves are made out of on contact.

Long

@cozykaffe@snouts.online You'd be surprised at the kinds of things that are in high school chemistry supply closets.

We worked as a TA for a chemistry lab in high school, and the supply closet had an entire wall of shelves covered with danger symbols and warnings about explosive substances, highly toxic substances, strong oxidizers, and more.

I seem to recall that there was also one mystery bottle that turned out to be literally illegal to have in a school, but it was okay because it had been sitting in the closet since before it was made illegal.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online How much of a spill? Mercury has a fairly substantial vapor pressure, so spilled mercury will become mercury vapor that can then be inhaled and cause who knows what kind of problems. I'd err on the side of caution with that one, as long as it's more than one broken fluorescent light or something.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online Arsenic, on the other hand, just wants you dead. Arsenic metal is just as toxic as its compounds, and it doesn't resist oxidation anywhere near as well as lead and mercury.

@cozykaffe@snouts.online Lead is, if we remember right, much less toxic than mercury. We don't get squeamish working with lead, anyway, while we absolutely do if we ever have to work with mercury. Or cadmium, for that matter. Cadmium is also very toxic and for whatever reason people seem to not know of it in the same way they know of mercury and lead.
