Every now and then, we're reminded that some of the most powerful terrestrial telescopes on earth are called the Very Large Array, the Very Large Telescope, the Large Binocular Telescope, the South African Large Telescope, and in general every variation of "Large Telescope" you can imagine.

I read something interesting. In ancient China, there were a number of schools of philosophy, and one of them, which wikipedia translates as the "school of minor-talks", is composed entirely of common wisdom collected from ordinary people. It didn't have a famous philosopher at its head like Confucianism and Taoism do; rather, there were government officials whose job was to go around and collect wisdom from random people, which would then presumably be recorded.

After further playing with namecheap, I have learned that a-place-to-call-ho.me is also free, as is the-adventure-of-l.ink (this one with or without hyphens).

The domain name "atrulyalarmingquantityofbe.es" is untaken.

Just thought someone might like to know that.

I just searched on duckduckgo to see if there was any news from the Opportunity rover (which has been inactive since June due to a dust storm putting it in low-power mode), and... Seriously? Fox News is being that negative about it? The Opportunity rover has already lasted far, far longer than it was ever planned to! I know it's Fox News but come on. Typical for them to focus on the money, too.

Why is it so hard to find quiet mechanical keyboards?

It looks like we're going to manage to build our entire computer for $943.29 after we get the last few components. What we have now is already very nice, and only cost $589.96, but we still plan to add a graphics card and a few other parts, which brings the price up.

Still, it will end up with a good Ryzen apu with a GTX 1060 6gb graphics card and a good quality 1080p IPS monitor, all for less than $1000.

I wonder whether a sponge would be able to absorb other liquids. They're used with water most often, but could one absorb mineral oil? Gasoline? Would adding surfactants help either of those, even if you don't add water as well?

But that purchase is a matter for another time. Perhaps we'll be able to get it next month, or the month after that if not.

Currently, for the mouse, speakers, graphics card, and one additional case fan that we plan to use, we're going to need to shell out just over $350. On top of that, a mousepad would probably be nice...
