I think that even if Ethereum actually does what they say they were gonna do and do away with mining, it'll ultimately be meaningless for the environment. Ethereum miners will just migrate to a different currency that still uses mining.

And so long as mining is profitable, it won't matter how many "environmentally friendly" cryptocurrencies there are, because the miners will just flock to the cryptocurrencies that they can mine.
