@amberhearts@meow.social Well at the least you know it can work for you so that could be a good impetus to start the journey.

IMPORTANT REMINDER when you migrate instances, make sure to allow anyone to follow you on the new instance!

If you don't, you'll have to approve every single follow when the instances move your followers over. This will be a pain in the ass.

Create the account, migrate, wait until all your followers have moved over, THEN set up following permissions. #migration #meta

The odds are against me ever being a parent to children, but if i were I'd consider it my mission to do as much as I could not to constantly make them feel weird and self conscious about their appearance.

When the book is hitting on the proper tone though it works. There is a solid sense of humor about a rogue and his himbo just doing their thing.

violence and other thigns

Though every once in a while the book does a gory bit or some violence that makes me go "this doesnt fit the tone of the rest of the novel why are you doing this?"

I am so far really enjoying Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan. It isn't the most ingenious fantasy novel ever but it has decent pacing, characters I want to spend time with, and a genuine setting I want to explore. That's all I really need: a reasonable story.

I did do a cursory check to see if Sullivan had anything super objectionable before I committed to this book. Couldn't find anything but I am sure there will be something at some point.

re: The Tregedy of X by Ellery Queen

I mean don't get me wrong I love amurder mystery where the police are utter dunderheads but... this needed more.

I was just humming a Fleetwood Mac song (“Rhiannon”) while making my morning tea, reached for a sweetener packet and —

oh my gosh

Stevia Nicks 🤣

The Tregedy of X by Ellery Queen

At its core the main sleuth in this story is an interesting idea. A deaf man who is so incredibly competent, charismatic, smart, and massively sexy that everyone just wants to do what he asks. People respect the guy a lot and he's good at solving crimes because he logical (his skills work best in locked room scenarios). People just fall over themsleves for this Drury Lane or comment on how attractive he is. Also he's a master of disguise.

My issue is the pacing as said. If you set up that Drury Lane KNOWS who the killer is and then won't say you actually need to set up a better course of action then the attourney and police officer investigate random people because it feels like we are spinning our wheels. Lane knows who the killer is so investigating all these other people feels like a waste of time.

The ending chapter Lane actually reverses and says "Well I suspected but I wasn't sure if there were accomplices and we needed to get everyone" which.... you could have said that and kept the tension so we are left wondering if anyone else is in this conspiracy.

Also, the bigger problem is all the side characters and family members don't get real development. They're uninteresting which undercuts one of the strengths of a murder mystery which is outsized crazy character studies.

The solution to the puzzle is interesting. But to get there we have to tread so much uninteresting water.
