I've ended up mostly replacing it with « /me does things and "says stuff" » but also sometimes ::double colons:: because that was a really old thing people did for actiontext according to the friend I picked it up from

discord does support \*escaped asterisks\* but that's too much effort to type

why did markdown have to use * anyway when they're in common use for other things

particularly the usage or lack thereof of capital letters and punctuation, and the presence of punctuation that doesn't exist elsewhere
