This behavior looks correct- the posts here are set as "private", not "direct", which means that once federated, if you follow the person whose post federated remotely then the server you're on will give you access to the post.
This isn't true with a direct message. I think adding an @ remotely is enough to federate the post.
Awoo.space is a Mastodon instance where members can rely on a team of moderators to help resolve conflict, and limits federation with other instances using a specific access list to minimize abuse.
