one of the things that's so frustrating to me is that there's enormous amounts of money flowing in the US economy right now. If you're in one of those channels where the money is flowing, life is Very Good. All that is essentially needed is to get an engagement there and the $$$$ flow.

But if you're not, it's slim pickins. I have a wide enough acquaintance range that I see this loud and clear.

I have so many odd computer habits picked up from various environments. Like:

DOS taught me to backspace and retype rather than use the cursor

HTTP referers taught me to always open a new tab/window when I'm going to a new site, even if I'm closing the old site

Ruby taught me to check explicitly for True and False values

PHP taught me that even when the site isn't built on PHP, the bug is PHP's fault

I saw an article with the title "How to think about AI like a VC" and wondered: why would anybody ever want to do that?

It's like writing an article called "How to think about bottle caps like a problem gambler".

my VPN is testy sometimes so I've been trying to use the internet through the firewall here in china, and it's amazing how much of the web breaks when you can't even make requests to twitter and google domains. e.g., if your non-firewalled page uses google fonts, or embeds a twitter widget, it hangs on load (until the request times out)—if it loads at all.

mastodon NEEDS an archive feature. instances go down all the time. so being able to download your toots would be a really really really useful (almost necessary) feature.
