Holiday travel (?)
@jaycie wait, how does that work?????
Politics, Facebook
As an aside, it's a dark year for the tech industry when a major news magazine can ask with a straight face whether one of the largest and most successful tech companies can be tried for crimes against humanity.
As Facebook is the #1 site on the web, part of my job on the Edge perf team is to make sure that Facebook runs fast. It's hard to find any corner of the tech industry that doesn't have blood on its hands. What a demoralizing time to work in tech.
@Gargron The scientists that could come up with theories like that and prove them were kept far, far away from a 22-million-dollars-a-year contract paid out to a friend of a high-ranking senator.
USPol
@Azure Yep
If we could time-travel and run the browsers of today on the web of ~2010, that baby would *fly*
@natecull Currently it has three republicans (Pai, Carr, O'Reilly) and two democrats (Clyburn, Rosenworcel). Under Obama it had three democrats and two republicans (including Pai).
@natecull the FCC is required to have a minority nominated by the opposition party. McConnell picked Pai, just how Schumer got to pick a minority of the current members.
death penalty, punishment, justice
@Elizafox If we had a fairer justice system, where the death penalty was being applied to Hitler or Bin Laden or Mengele, sure. But our justice system sucks.
I buy that it's a waste of time to try to rehabilitate some people. But to me, the potential extra "justice" from death penalty rather than life in prison, even when warranted, is a lot less than the extra injustice from the death penalty being applied far too often.

Published in 2014 but surprisingly prescient, given recent platform changes by Twitter, Patreon, YouTube, and others.
I'm betting that @christi3k is exactly right about why Patreon has changed their fee structure this week in a way that, in my opinion, makes their business basically worthless. https://subfictional.com/my-theory-patreon-doesnt-want-to-be-a-money-services-business/
Especially since, OMG, "You can no longer use your Patreon balance to make pledge payments to avoid the per-pledge processing fee."
