@natecull the FCC is required to have a minority nominated by the opposition party. McConnell picked Pai, just how Schumer got to pick a minority of the current members.
death penalty, punishment, justice
@Elizafox If we had a fairer justice system, where the death penalty was being applied to Hitler or Bin Laden or Mengele, sure. But our justice system sucks.
I buy that it's a waste of time to try to rehabilitate some people. But to me, the potential extra "justice" from death penalty rather than life in prison, even when warranted, is a lot less than the extra injustice from the death penalty being applied far too often.
"The Professional Sharer" by CGPGrey: http://www.cgpgrey.com/blog/the-professional-sharer
Published in 2014 but surprisingly prescient, given recent platform changes by Twitter, Patreon, YouTube, and others.
I'm betting that @christi3k is exactly right about why Patreon has changed their fee structure this week in a way that, in my opinion, makes their business basically worthless. https://subfictional.com/my-theory-patreon-doesnt-want-to-be-a-money-services-business/
Especially since, OMG, "You can no longer use your Patreon balance to make pledge payments to avoid the per-pledge processing fee."
Four million dollar birthday parties. What could you do with that much money that wouldn't involve spoiling a child?

Honestly I probably could have skipped my whole "why I'm leaving Twitter" blog post and just posted this comic instead. (source: http://www.listen-tome.com/wasted-hours/) https://toot.cafe/media/APuvNvSDKV4yyuCFL3k
It's like someone told Trump there was a single simple thing he could do to set the Middle East on fire and inspire a new wave of terrorism, and he said "Oh yeah baby, let's do it!"

I wonder if anyone's put together a standard prenup for finaid marriages yet (to make them easy to dissolve, determine what to do if one of the students doesn't graduate within N years).
SOON: parents arranging their kids' undergrad marriages as part of the college application process, thinkpieces bemoaning that the kids aren't responsible for doing it themselves

<<If the Bible is so against systemic solutions to poverty, why is a jubilee year declared that releases people from debt to alleviate intergenerational poverty? What is leket, skikhah, pe’ah, and maasar if not taxes meant to create a safety net for those in need? 1/
Maasar. Not a voluntary contribution. An obligation.
Leket. Not voluntary, but obligatory.
Shikhḥah. Not voluntary. Obligatory.
Pe’ah. Obligatory. Lev 19:9. These are taxes, y’all.>>
uspol, birdsite
Ugh, I really gotta stop boosting political stuff. I got fed up with birdsite because my feed there was all politics all the time (my own fault for who I followed, obvs). I cleaned that up, spend more time here now, but here I was ALSO getting into the habit of boosting political things and leading my timelines in the same direction.
Stopping that now. Only gonna boost genuinely interesting things about politics, not expressions of anger and outrage, however much I agree.
Oh man, I love it when EFF gets philosophical: "DRM gets made over the course of years, by skilled engineers, at a cost of millions of dollars. It gets broken in days, by teenagers, with hobbyist equipment. That's not because the DRM-makers are stupid, it's because they're doing something stupid.”
(Also this is a terrifyingly good article: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/10/drms-dead-canary-how-we-just-lost-web-what-we-learned-it-and-what-we-need-do-next)

<<Hundreds of faith leaders from around the country signed onto a letter opposing the GOP tax plan that advocates delivered to Senate leaders on Wednesday, saying the plan "violates our moral principles of equality, justice and fairness."
More than 2,400 representatives from Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, Buddhist and other faith traditions signed the letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).>>
tasty recipes, uspol, resist
Contacting reps can be nervewracking and awkward and I want to make it feel better for people.
US folks, they're about to vote on that awful tax bill that includes an ACA repeal. Contact your reps (try resistbot or https://5calls.org/ ) and if you tell me here, as thanks I'll post a neural net-generated recipe ingredient here just for you.
