other ups: caught an illicit glimpse of a baby seal; saw the juvenile Cooper's hawks again this morning, and they evidently have a couple at PAWS also, because I heard the whistling and went "I know *exactly* what that is!" XD
downs (animal death, not explicit)
unfortunately the owl that I'd seen last week didn't make it, which wasn't surprising--it was in bad shape, too bad shape for them to figure out what exactly was wrong with it, & it died overnight. also today we got a great blue heron who'd fallen out of a tree, and was very weak--similarly, they didn't know what was wrong with it, but it had lost a lot of blood. I wasn't in the room when it was euthanized, but I came in right after. the vet & I were both teary.
home from volunteering, finally cooled down enough that I don't feel like I'm going to immediately melt.
today had ups and downs. ups: saw a pileated woodpecker on the way to the bus stop & got a picture; while cleaning the aviary ward I got to see a red-breasted sapsucker try to escape, and a barred owl being vigorously annoyed at humanity; watched bobcat kittens being cute for a while; did satisfying work and did not die of heat stroke.
Bluh.
I could use a hand, friends. http://paypal.me/joyeusenoelle
he does this thing where he puts his forepaws over the edge of the tray and sets his chin down between them, and looks like a Muppet. kills me with cute. XD
here's a recording of the same kind of whistling I'm hearing outside: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j90-DDYo7JE
okay now I can hear the Cooper's hawk fledglings whistling from my apartment. they are VERY VERY EXCITE XD
and it occurred to me as I was walking past them that they are very likely exactly why the crow family doesn't hang out here any more--and they may be responsible for the loss of the one crow fledgling. that's nature for ya...

oh. the fact that it's already half a million degrees outside might have something to do with my state of ungruntledness. bah. need to go to store today, specifically for canned cat food, which I'm not sure will otherwise last until I can get it Thursday, since tomorrow is my volunteering day. *sigh*
and if I'm gonna do that I should probably start doing it sooner than later because it's only going to get more miserable the longer I wait. :P
