if anyone here has their books available for kindle, I’d be happy to take recommendations — I buy and read on average at least one book per week and am especially fond of stuff that makes me think (either because I agree strongly or disagree strongly with something about the book); you can spy on me on goodreads if you need data to figure me out as a reader

Rereading a preachy article on why Mastodon "will fail" from like the week I joined when there were maybe 40,000 people here:

😙 🍵

Also remember:

Twit → Twitter → Twittest

Nobody is here to be the Twittest.

walking home from the store, I heard two "snap crackle THUD" sequences that were big trees falling over. also saw several branches fall, and a hailstorm of pinecones. be careful out there, Seattle-area folks, the wind can be dangerous!

The Joke: welcome to Mastodon, here's your fursuit and your copy of Das Kapital

Reality: welcome to Mastodon, here's your six alt fursonas, a copy of the Anarchist's Cookbook, an eight-week course on the programming language of your choice, a tarot deck, some brand spanking new hormones, and a complex geometric sigil you should memorize that will turn into a neural counter-virus so that when the Singularity finally hits we can make sure The Straights don't claim it for themselves

listen we're not going to find out that this place is literally stealing our souls and turning us into Russian bots, right

oh is it time again already?

The mastodon stages:

1: getting used to the interface

2: discovering that most people are just people, engaged in everyday adventures, big & small

3: the allure of the notification sound

4: a gradual getting used to the fact that not everything is about US politics, and that it's okay to filter it out on a macro level

5: a quiet moment when you think "there can still be poetry in this world"

6: some sort of reconciliation with the quantum magic that is the federated timeline

7: pineapples

When I joined masto, I gravitated towards following creative peeps and noticed a thing that's pretty common to all of us: we feel guilty for promoting places that people can buy our work or otherwise support us financially. So I started the #CreativeToots hashtag for that very reason. Got an Etsy page? Online store? Patreon? Selling a piece of art? Throw that tag on it. Do it with unfettered abandon. Everyone else: Look at that tag for artists to support. Buy their stuff. Help them create. <3

So hey, now everyone has been coming over to Mastodon, here's some shameless self-promotion!

I write a comic called The Pride, all about a team of all #LGBTQ+ superheroes, and you can get it on ComiXology and Amazon, and in print at www.thepride.bigcartel.com

Also, you can follow on Facebook on facebook.com/ThePrideComic

There's be loads more new comics in 2018 as well, so get in now! A perfect gift for Christmas, jus' sayin'! :P mastodon.social/media/T4Is47FD

The local timeline: things that happen on the instance you're at

The home timeline: things people you're following are posting and boosting (follow moar folks to see moar posts)

The notifications timeline: things that happens at you (can be filtered to exclude favs and boosts, if so desired)

The federated timeline: ...daym there sure are a lot of instances out there

HMMMMM. sciencealert.com/non-coeliac-g "Your 'gluten sensitivity' could be explained by something else found in wheat." it seems plausible, given that I've been having continued (and even worsening) digestive problems while keeping gluten-free. I'm going to have to delve into this "fructan" stuff. if it's the cause... I'm going to be VERY SAD because it's in GARLIC. ;______;

new friends migrating over to mastodon, if you're looking for a more tweetdeck-like interface, kurotodon is a google chrome plugin that lets you have all your mastodon instances in one place. you can get it here:
chrome.google.com/webstore/det
mastodon.social/media/iTHUDPk4

In a similar vein, do you like monsters and similar friends? Do you want an absolutely obscene character limit (1,666 at last count) and tons of emoji in colors outside the usual earth tones? Do you just want a place other than the main instance for some reason? Try monsterpit.net for a friendly place with friendly people and PROBABLY no deathtraps in the floor.

Remember folks, if you abandon Twitter, Facebook or Google, it's not a boycott, it's a STRIKE.

Because you're the [unpaid] workers that earn them billions of dollars in capital.

When you don't post, they don't get the benefit of your labour. And when you don't use, they lose money.

Social Media STRIKE days should be a thing.
