@ekaitz_zarraga it isn't for my phd, I am working on a mesh network, pretty much the next version of Dodo.

I am making it because I want a smart home that handles everything locally and doesn't require a lot of configuration at the start.

Once things work I am planning on releasing it, but I want to make it actually work before releasing it.

Well, the local multi-cast mesh part is working at least.

Do artists benefit from people listening to their music on bandcamp? I could see it helping with some sort of ranking thing, or it could just be irrelevant

did a new song!!!!!

it's a cover of @fireh9lly's excellent tune ""Robots"" and i happen to think it slaps, have a listen:

envelopegenerator.bandcamp.com

also please check out all of holly's music soundcloud.com/darlinginvasion

(ps if you buy it on bandcamp you're helping not one but TWO troubled artists. plus it's my birthday tomorrow so,,,,,)

love xxx

I haven't made anything big with it yet, but Julia is quickly becoming my favourite programming language.

Now if I need to figure out if the claim that you can compile stand-alone binaries with it is true, because that would be awesome.

Blazing saddles seems appropriate here for some reason

@theoutrider this is one reason I avoid AAA games. I like my fish bothering, thank you very much.

Now I get to figure out how to effectively use coroutines.

Because I am a professional engineer I have warnings like "Changing this setting may break everything and plunge the earth into a 1000 year reign of darkness. Or it may work just find and cause no trouble.'

Also just about every advanced setting that has the potential to break something is under the heading 'Here there be Dragons'.

Yep.

Every so often I realise just how terrible I am in node and javascript.

It is a bit weird

dog training hot take

@theoutrider Javert is the same way. She is not at all obedient in the way that people mean while talking about dogs, but she loves everyone and seeks approval to the point where I feel guilty about it, but it mean she behaves nicely unless she is feeling stubborn.

The only problem is that she doesn't understand that anything in the world could hurt her, she thinks that everyone and everything this is her friend, including moving cars. So she is always on a leash.

dog training hot take

"obedience" is overrated in dogs, and training that focuses on it has a tendency to veer towards the Cesar Millan abuse brand

a dog does not need to be "obedient" to not be aggressive or unruly, and dogs are at least to some degree sentient so training them to mindless obedience is morally highly questionable IMO

NEWS: Controversy at Montreal Dynamics funding event
The company, which aims to do for robotic cats what Boston Dynamics has done for dogs, announced it has received 57M$ in funding.
At the event, an ex-employee claimed v1.0 of the robocat only sleeps.

I need to update the instructions for making a pie server so other people can use set one up easily.

Show thread

GitLab is done again, but this time I have all of the repos I need mirrored onto my pie server so it isn't very disruptive.

Yay pie server!

oh, and sub-organisations. Gitea doesn't let you have things like OokTech/Foo as an organisation.

Not the end of the world, but less than ideal.

I haven't looked into it much but it looks like the standards for federated pull requests and stuff for git are moving forward

Which is awesome and will make having a self-hosted gitea/gitlab/whatever server much more viable for open source projects
