while i want to celebrate the increasing popularity of mastodon.social, it's pretty sad and rude to see people talking about being the "first ones here", "getting in on the ground floor", even debating what to call users of mastodon.social

we already did that, we already had a culture, and goddamn it we're called tooties

While this probably won't be my main account, I really like the opt-in ideas that awoo.space uses. I would rather have easy per-user settings that let people make social groups easier even within a single server.

So what bothers me about the chart on social.guhnoo.org/ is that their color-coding implies that things like "moderation" and "doesn't allow controversial content" and "doesn't allow offensive speech" are BAD things on par with not supporting SSL. That's all-too-common F/OSS Freeze Peach thinking displayed front-and-center.

@labib I think it is supposed to be automatic once you have your instance set up. You may have to follow someone from mastodon.social for anything to work but that should be it from my understanding.

I really like that awoo.space has 'AWOO!' in place of 'TOOT'.

@Scone76 over in the right column there is a little link that says 'edit profile' under your display name.

@bishnu not when things are working correctly. There was a huge increase in the number of users on Mastodon.social (it went from about 20,000 to 40,000 in a few days) and that has put a huge amount of strain on the network. Hopefully it will be fixed soonish.

@Scone76 Hi! It is nice here. I think that a lot of the cool people from Mastodon.social have been migrating this way as people are splitting out into different servers.

As much as I like being one of the people on Mastodon.social who has been around a while, I have a new account here because the server is dying under the weight of the new users.

And I think that splitting into different servers with different cultures is the only way that the federated network is going to thrive. So there is that too.

@typhlosion I just made an alt here because mastodon.social seems to be dying under the weight of the 20,000 new users, I don't know if that is going to get better unless a bunch of people move to new servers.

@verge mastodon.social is a server on the GNU social federated network, which is a protocol for a service not unlike twitter.

Awoo Space

Awoo.space is a Mastodon instance where members can rely on a team of moderators to help resolve conflict, and limits federation with other instances using a specific access list to minimize abuse.
