Instead of lamenting the lack of material victories when we score a symbolic one, let's use the momentum of a symbolic victory to push HARDER for material ones.
Positive energy + positive intention helps us stay in the fight longer, friends
I'll always advocate showing people grace where it's warranted. Yes, there are bad-faith actors out there and people who are only "pretending" to not get it just to waste everyone's precious time.
But we're good enough to tell the difference, and to be patient when it counts.
I don't begrudge people who need time to understand, accept, and respond to their privilege. It's not an easy process, and expecting people to just jump to the end immediately makes it so much harder.
That being said, PLEASE AT LEAST commit to the process, people.
I'm a cis male, and that brings me a certain societal privilege that has nothing to do with being Black and gay. It's uncomfortable sitting with that, but not more uncomfortable than the friction women and trans friends have to deal with. I'm still learning how to recognize that.
We all want to believe we're good people, and that includes the mistaken belief that our success is due to the exercise of our virtues.
But that's not how it works. Success is not up to us. We are born into privilege based on arbitrary and unfair social rules.

We need to think about how folks rehabilitate back into our spaces. There are many examples of how not to do it, but each of us should consider what redemption looks like for these folks.
Otherwise, we're telling people there is no room for change at all.

Allowing people the grace to correct themselves after f*ing up is essential to improving society itself—assuming people genuinely want to correct themselves. Otherwise there’s no point in changing behavior if any error signals social death.

Richard and Mildred Loving's marriage was deemed illegal because she was Black and Native American and he was white. Their case went all the way to the Supreme Court. And on June 12, 1967, the couple won. "Loving Day" celebrates the historic ruling. https://trib.al/DyMO66L

I own a portable planetarium and I take it to rural areas to show people the universe. I mostly visit schools but I'm cool going to churches and community events.
Sometimes (often) I get flat earth believers who end up in the planetarium. Here's how I handle that. 🧵1/17
