Girl Scouts, Feels

I work for a company owned by a megacorp. One of the other companies owned by the same megacorp has a VP on the board of the Girl Scouts of Western Washington. As part of the "'women' in 'tech'" work that I do, I got invited to a luncheon to benefit the Girl Scouts.

I expected a presentation with speakers while I ate a salad. I did not expect the punch in the feels when they opened by highlighting the 300k they raised in support of a trans kid's troop.

I was not braced for the presence of a very obviously trans scout in her sash proudly standing among her peers. Specifically, I wasn't ready for the stabbing saudade, the sense of having missed out on something very important I didn't know I'd wanted.

I was most certainly not ready for my coworkers noticing that one of the other scouts had about my color hair, and then everyone at the table comparing their histories with the organization.

I have to go back to the office. I just need to get myself back to this world, the one where every happened nonlinear fashion and I didn't know what I was missing because I could never have had it, first.

I don't like that world very much.

I like to think of those moments with the perspective that they wouldn't be possible without people like us painstakingly building those paths and connections before them.

We did good, Orrery. ♥️

@literorrery Yeah. The pasts we never could have known...
