this is from hakko's official marketing blurb about the FX-888D

this is what said interface looks like. that's all there is other than a power switch on the side. you can't tell me that's easy to use, that's the most unintuitive interface imaginable
-F

@Felthry wh...

...does... does the up button increase the temperature??... d-does it have an upper limit??... does it just keep going up infinitely???

.... and... why does the enter button exist what purpose could it have

@Nine the up button cycles between five preset temperatures, and there's some arcane method of changing the presets that you can't do without the manual

there's also a password system, somehow, for process control
-F

@Felthry @Nine …what if you need it a few degrees hotter on the spot

@noiob @Nine gotta go through the complicated process of changing the presets
-F

@Felthry @Nine what happened to just having "up" and "down"

@noiob @Nine none of that annoyance of "having to remember the layout of a keypad" or "having up and down buttons"
-F

@Felthry @Nine I have a two-button USB soldering iron that has a more intuitive interface than this

Follow

@Felthry @Nine you can put a password on your soldering iron

· · Web · 2 · 0 · 1

@noiob @Felthry gotta use flux to make sure the solder flows into the right configuration for the password

@Nine @Felthry it can't be that hard to put a few more buttons on a 150€ soldering iron

@noiob @Nine €150? it's only $100-ish here

your point still stands though
-F

@Felthry @Nine you can probably get it cheaper but this is the first hit on duckduckgo

@noiob @Nine there's actual reason for this, process control stuff

you don't want some worker who thinks they know better changing the temperature and ending up with a lot of unreliable cold joints, or heating the board too much and damaging parts--and even if it doesn't damage anything if a part fails and you complain to the manufacturer they'll just say "well you didn't solder it to our specifications so too bad"
-F

@Felthry @Nine that's not a problem to be solved with tools, that's a problem to be solved with proper training

@noiob @Nine i mean i agree but also the thing i said about complaining to the manufacturer of a faulty part? they'll look at the fact that the temperature *could* have been changed and say too bad, we're not doing anything for you
