Plugged my PS1 in through my component cable and it looks weird and distorted, rapidly rolling diagonally. I'm surprised there's video at all, so I wonder what it's getting from the console. RGB?
It might actually be an RGB signal somehow getting sent through the RCA connectors. Huh!
Maybe that's how Sony implemented component output on the PS2 while reusing the PS1's video connector. Through the pins for RGB, probably with a sense for cable type so the PS2/3 knows whether to output RGB or YPbPr.

@noiob It surely needs to be able to detect though, if you've just plugged a cable in and it needs to know which type you plugged in.

Seriously? Does the PS2 just default to YPbPr then? Because I never had to set it. What if you are using RGB, like with SCART?

@noiob Shipped with composite here, not sure about elsewhere. I thought composite was a problem in SECAM countries at least.
@onfy why would it? VCRs usually only had composite
@noiob tbf VHS is inherently composite and as a result SECAM VHS exists... in fact there are two incompatible SECAM formats.
