it's so interesting how written abbreviations eventually become spoken despite the spoken versions not actually being shorter

example: GG is shorter to write than "good game," but not any shorter to say, even though people now often say GG literally, out loud

@clarfonthey gg also has a different meaning. You wouldn't say "good game" to concede a match, for instance, you'd say "gg"

@noiob yeah, although that has to do more generally with the way we use written internet speech to convey formality

like GG can be an abbreviation for "get good" but I'd argue that's not the intent here, it's just stating it as a formality in the same way people say "thanks" for things they don't actually like

@clarfonthey I mean yeah, my understanding is that it's how you formally concede a game of Starcraft

@noiob that also makes sense given how multinational the starcraft community is, since it's just a formality and the underlying English meaning isn't as useful

@clarfonthey p sure it developed from telling people "good game" after a match

@clarfonthey I don't think it necessarily can't mean "good game" anymore either. Sometimes you just gotta hand it to your opponent
