i genuinely don't understand how youtube as a company makes a profit

are there really that many people using the site without adblock? I feel like it's gotta be less than 10% of people

@gmsh most people use Youtube through the phone app or their TV

@gmsh yeah computer users are in the minority

@noiob @gmsh yeah like, that's what i was thinking

it's because i use youtube on mobile and TV so much that i went out of my way to convince my parents to get us all premium, since it's much easier than having to fiddle with an adblocker that's network wide (yes, pihole exists, yes, i've tried it, no, it's not good for my use-cases anyways)

@EeveeEuphoria @gmsh on android and google tv you can get modified apps with ad blockers

@noiob @gmsh yeah but they're all either shady as hell, shut down, or made by cryptobros

...sometimes all 3, like that one app i can't remember the name of

@EeveeEuphoria @gmsh don't care who makes them as long as they work lol

@noiob @gmsh i mean personally i don't want to install potential malware on my phone with my bank details, but you do you i guess lol

@EeveeEuphoria idk I don't have my bank details on my phone

@noiob my bank app literally only works on android because any other bank i sign up for tells me "lol you don't have a consistent income, get bent asshole"

@EeveeEuphoria I mean your bank app shouldn't contain your bank details

@EeveeEuphoria and unless you're rooted apps can't affect each other

@noiob tell me why all the reports about any malware on android ever talk about how bank details get stolen

@EeveeEuphoria idk I run a current security patch, I don't really read those. I'm guessing stuff like autofill?

@EeveeEuphoria I'm not saying you shouldn't be worried I'm saying I'm not particularly worried

@noiob 2 seconds of googling tells me "Xenomorph" can get bank details from up to 300 apps

and just simple inference tells me they can steal this info by you just logging into your bank, which'd happen because... you log into your bank on your phone, then once it's in, the malware just snoops and steals the data

even on the latest security version, there's a lot you can do, especially when you have to use an app that does shit like patching another entire app

@EeveeEuphoria @noiob that's because it requests accessibility settings, which android warns you to not to do for apps you don't trust

@twi @noiob yeah like, that one app i'm still struggling to remember the name of does want access for it, does it not?

and more to the point, the original post was about how the majority of people don't use adblockers, do we want people installing this stuff and making the idea of changing apps normal, especially with shady APKs lol

@EeveeEuphoria @twi idk you can't really get a non-shady patched youtube app lol, I just don't wanna give them money

@EeveeEuphoria @twi yeah I suggested getting a really cheap piece of hardware that turns any tv into a thing that runs android apps

@noiob @twi shit yeah that's the one that fit the bill of being made by some cryptobro asshole, isn't open source, and is just generally shady all around

@EeveeEuphoria @noiob i think you're thinking of Vanced (dead), not Revanced

Show newer

@twi @noiob "always" doesn't mean march of last year, if the initial commit is anything to go by

@EeveeEuphoria I mean they get a token from the server that's only for the app

@noiob @gmsh oh also you can't get those on stuff like, the switch or xbox, so

@EeveeEuphoria @gmsh yeah but a chromecast with google tv hd is like 40€
