EUROPE: "Haha, silly primitives! Look at them hulling this 'maize' stuff with their primitive technologies! We have MACHINES to do that!"
ALSO EUROPE: "Hey, let's take a bunch of this 'maize' back to Europe and eat it, without bothering to talk to the locals about it first, since everything basically belongs to us and we're smarter than everybody!"
ALSO ALSO EUROPE: "Hey, let's die in heaps because we never learned about nixtamalization, we aren't getting any niacin out of this snazzy new food, and now we all have pellagra!"
ALSO ALSO ALSO EUROPE *STILL*: "Man, I can't believe how much more sophisticated we are than everybody else."
ALSO ALSO ALSO ALSO EUROPE (AND ITS KIDS) STILL: "Let's base our entire diet around maximizing corporate profit and discover bold new health problems nobody has ever seen before!"

so the National Lottery has reasonably enough decided to go ahead with its £500,000 grant to UK trans charity Mermaids, on top of the over £300,000 raised by @Hbomberguy's stream. #ThanksGraham https://twitter.com/Mermaids_Gender/status/1097867934750396418
Twitter, drama (cont.)
I find Jaron Lanier very insightful here. He points out that algorithmic social media tends to split people into two teams, then shows the most extreme/outrageous version of one team to the other so that they can whip themselves up into a frenzy.
"And it just turns out as a matter of course, that the same data that is a positive, constructive process for the people who generated it […] can be used to irritate other groups."

Twitter, drama
I don't use Twitter, but via RSS and Mastodon crossposters I occasionally get a glimpse into some drama that's going on over there. I see mention of a "holy war", "<x>-gate", etc., even within some innocuous community like webdev or JavaScript.
There is no holy war; there is only Twitter whipping up controversy for engagement. If you think the "other side" is some cartoonish caricature of evil, ask yourself who benefits from presenting that worldview to you.
