@vahnj an llc allows for the most flexibility (i.e. no need for a board) and is the cheapest to incorporate iirc (been a minute) depending on where you do it. also yes, anything at all is much better than not incorporating.

a final point i'll make about critically engaging with how you distribute and exercise your resources is this parting thought: gargron isn't the only person who has put or is putting work into this website, but he is the only person getting money out of it. if you can boost his patreon, there's no reason you can't boost mine too.

bleak appreciates your listening. feel free to drop a coin in the jar / boost

but also also, don't get it double twisted. this IS about me and gargron. it's also simultaneously about all that other stuff. critically engaging with the financial world starts between you and me or someone like me. my fucking teeth are falling out and i'm getting evicted on Sunday and my welfare (i am chronically disabled) isn't nearly enough to cover either of these expenses (moving costs/deposits/moving truck etc.)

and like, don't get it twisted. this isn't about me or gargron or even patreon or the fediverse. this is a matter of people with means, platforms, and capability of exerting spare effort towards other goals, and the platforms they interact with, and the level of critical thought they apply to where they're allocating their resources. look at Drew Scanlon's patreon for a mild example. look at, others include hard right patreons sitting at $25k/month.

feeling how much patreon has been coopted by white dudes when gargron's pet project has 10x as much as my combined life and works patreon. seeing how willing people (here meaning the fediverse) are to boost and share garg's patreon compared to mine or like anyone else who's at risk of dying to poverty

what's actually more valuable to you, where are you going to direct your voice, effort, and money? i'm not the only one paying attention.

@jplebreton i don't think it's so much no room for innovation as it is innovation for innovation's sake rather than toward some actual desirable end is just a horrible idea for anything meant to be used by anyone other than the experimenter. there was a profound lack of consideration for the people who would be affected.

@datapup@mastodon.social no problem. thank my paypal if you mean it ; -)

@datapup@mastodon.social in my experience, gargron doesn't take criticism well. my first interaction with him was asking about privacy and his response was to tell me privacy isn't possible in federated social media which, coming from other fednets, i knew to be completely untrue. i left for months after that, didn't see how the rollout went.

@datapup@mastodon.social just kinda box it in there on the side. you can do all kinds of jank shit. on diaspora (speaking as an end user, mind), profiles are sort of cloned over into the jabber instance so everyone on a given server has a profile, contacts populated by those diaspora contacts on pods that also have it. it has another DM system, also, but being built on top of salmon instead of gnusocial there's inherently more control over your streams so it wouldn't fly here.

@datapup@mastodon.social with such an implementation you just can't reach profiles on servers that haven't implemented the system, rather than publishing anyway and having private data go public or relying on a growing population of users to keep track manually of which servers will allow them to maintain the level of privacy mastodon instances would.

@datapup@mastodon.social the warnings are misleading in that sites that aren't "trusted" are assumed to have malintent rather than to just not have that functionality. ostatus has been kicking around for about seven years and there are a good bunch of extant networks so it becomes a kind of sabotage. other social media have implemented DMs via private instant messaging – diaspora uses jabber, which is pushing 20 years – kinda sectioned away from the stream. a lot less potential for leakage.

as implemented, DMs to an ostatus network that is not a mastodon instance won't stay private. one of a bunch of flaws with the sort of concentric circles model of privacy going on here.

the problem is you cannot systematize centuries of white supremacy away just incidentally.

forever bitter this place went business as usual after damn near every woman of color was pushed away from the site and that eugen's answer of "build your own instance" was accepted and repeated as though access has never been an issue.
