I'm playing Shadow of Mordor, which is a great game if you enjoy being shittalked and then killed repeatedly by orcs

video game deaths

@noiob Yeah I uh played that for <1h before going "something about the particular flavor of violence in this game is making me feel really gross. I think I'm done."

video game deaths

@starkatt it's going a little hard on the "Uruks live solely to kill and really enjoy it"

video game deaths

@noiob okay if I talk about/process this a little more? I kinda want to discuss it some but also I don't want to yuck your yum if you're having a good time :)

video game deaths

@starkatt Ah sorry, must've missed this. Go ahead, I'll be fine ^^

video game deaths

@starkatt I've been playing it for way too long by now, and honestly what irks me most is the way the orcs are portrayed (I guess one can partly blame Tolkien for that). At this point, I'd love to hear your take on the violence in the game, actually. If you're still up for it + when you find the time, obviously

video game deaths

@noiob So I think what bothered me most about it was that killing orcs was considered a contextless, a priori good thing to do.

video game deaths

@starkatt Well, that's Tolkien 101 for you, I guess. LOTR never had nuance between good and evil.
And yeah, especially when seeing how much thought was put into making the orcs separate characters (ten times more in the sequel), it's sad that they're basically just colored cannon fodder

video game deaths

@noiob it felt genocidal to me, honestly. And yeah I get that it comes straight from Tolkein but that didn't make it any more fun to play.
