What I am reading now: the second book in Ann Leckie's Ancilliary trilogy. It's hard to describe the premise without spoiling the FLAWLESS way Leckie unfolds this universe in the first book. Seriously, she learned her chops in short stories, and it shows. If you love putting together the jigsaw puzzle of a world as an author reveals them, do yourself a favor and pick up "Ancilliary Justice" blind.

Seattle suburbs are different from a lot of other suburbs in that a whole lot of the trees were left standing as part of development. I'm glad for it.

When my mom died, I didn't feel quite this way. I was sad, yes, but it was different.
She died of cervical cancer, and knew it was coming for months. She chose the time to stop getting life-extending treatment. She and everyone around her had plenty of time to reach acceptance. Though it was definitely too soon it felt... natural, cyclic. There was no shock when she finally passed.
This doesn't feel anything like that.
