one line from House of Leaves in particular sticks with me, a quote from a (fictional) french caver:
“Darkness is impossible to remember. Consequently cavers desire to return to those unseen depths where they have just been. It is an addiction. No one is ever satisfied. Darkness never satisfies. Especially if it takes something away which it almost always invariably does.”
The standard narrative of the Stanford Prison Experiment is almost completely bullshit.

Seattle head tax repeal, angry
"Mosqueda has earned my vote in the next election. I cannot say the same of you."
Seattle head tax repeal, angry
"As a city councilmember, you are the one of the prime political powers in Seattle. Capitulation only shows weakness. If giant corporations wanted to fight against solutions to homelessness, then that's a fight I expected you to take on wholeheatedly.
It's a joke to call this city democratic when corporate funding for paid signature gatherers is enough to cause an immediate policy reversal.
Seattle head tax repeal, angry
"Hi,
I'm a resident of District [redacted], and I am both shocked and dismayed by your decision to repeal the head tax. If you're not willing to stand up to big businesses using their money to spread fear and disinformation, then you don't have the courage necessary to hold office. This was never going to be easy.
There's a scene in Ruin of Angels (most recent Craft Sequence book) where it describes a hallway as "lit with a color she had never seen before."
And at the time I'm thinking, okay, magic octarine color, whatever. She's inside a squid god. A bit out-of-tone for the setting but okay.
Then a couple paragraphs later, it's mentioned that her escort's teeth are glowing, and I realized Oh! It's blacklight! I know how that looks.
That was a cool moment and captures some of the essence of the series.

A moment of silence for our siblings who died at #Pulse two years ago today.

I want a series of Fred Rogers for President campaign ads. The Cabinet is sitting in the President's briefing room, outlining today's crises and concluding with a plea: "Mr. President, what do we do?" Everyone turns to the head of the table where an old TV and VCR turn on, and as the CRT warms up the VCR fast-forwards to a clip from "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" that covers exactly this situation. In one corner a general starts quietly weeping tears of joy, realizing that sharing is an option…
To put it more concisely:
Ontological and cultural-memetic explanations of identity are non-exclusive and I think that's really cool.
A huge amount of who I am and what I enjoy is shaped by the subculture and microculture around me.
That's okay. That doesn't make it any less real.
Maybe in other hypothetical contexts I wouldn't have ended up as a glow-loving fox-kin, but this is the context I actually inhabit. Culture makes us who we are.
