Opinion: Ethics is the most approachable branch of philosophy, but also by far the most difficult.

how long until nintendo accidentally makes furniture behavior in acpc turing-complete and then someone exploits a buffer overflow to use their campsite layout to mine bitcoin on your phone when you visit them

Also Lucy Liu is a stunningly talented actor. She does the thing where you can just look at her face and tell exactly what her character is thinking.

The show Elementary isn't ostentatious about it, but secretly has some absolutely brilliant cinematography.

as best I can tell the reason for that much emphasis placed on polynomial equations in algebra class is that a while ago mathematicians realized you could treat them as numbers in their own right (as vectors) & proofs about them were very much in vogue in the 16th and 17th centuries, the mathematical era before calculus became fashionable

& we don't really revisit our math curriculums, we just put new stuff on the end. So polynomials come before calculus comes before topological set theory &c

Being in a social group where the vast majority of people have chosen their own names makes it easy for me to forget how boring many people's names are :purple_heart:

@starkatt In short: They wanted to make super digital gold and one of the ways to do that was to make it concretely finite.

Laser printers are so much better than inkjet. Home inkjet printers are generally garbage.

Who needs colors anyway.

Serious bitcoin question: what was the design intent behind making the currency deflationary?

I'm still going on about Monsterhearts

On the other hand, sometimes I worry that Monsterhearts can be misery tourism. That trying to imagine abusive circumstances I've never actually experienced firsthand does a disservice to people who have been there.

I don't know, really?

I heard Avery Alder on a podcast where she said something along the lines of "the great thing about tabletop RPGs is that you can have experiences, without having the same *responsibility* to them that you do with actual events in your life."

That's really stuck with me.

Still trying to process what makes this game special. There's lots of little things, but it still feels like there's something big that I'm not wholly able to articulate yet.

The closest I can get is that the game encourages you not just to be terrible, but to be believably terrible. To be terrible in ways that actual living people around you might be or have experienced. And maybe as a result you'll learn how to be a slightly better person for real.

@baxil I got around to reading your car theft story, and it is properly baffling. Awesome :D

I wonder if being a furry will be seen as an Old People Thing in the next few decades.

Something about the Mastodon UI makes me significantly better about clicking on a post and checking replies before replying myself. It's good :)

There was some graffiti in my neighborhood saying “the government covers everything up”, and I just walked by to find a city employee painting over it.

THEORY CONFIRMED!!!!
