Ah yes, polycules: "poly", from the Greek for "many", and "cul", from the French for "butt"

I'm still going on about The Long Dark

Example: I was really aggressively recycling found clothing to keep my own gear in top condition which was *fine* and maybe even correct, but bit me in the ass when an animal attack destroyed my rather nice hats and gloves in a -20C windchill with no shelter nearby and no backup clothing.

It's not "path A or path B" type decisions, but more "will doing this thing to help a short-term need cause massive problems in the medium to long term?"

So a thing about this game is that the time between "make a decision" and "realize if it was a mistake or not" can be anywhere between like 30 seconds to a couple of hours. And even when you do get immediate feedback on a mistake, it's often another 10min or more before you can figure out if it's actually recoverable or not.

That's *way* longer than most games.

And it means second-guessing everything in a way that's pretty cool but also kind of intense.

heck I played some of that game to try and relax and now I am actually way more tense.

The Long Dark possible gameplay spoiler, animal attacks

Holy fuck though getting attacked by a bear is legitimately horrific.

Unlike with wolves, you can't even try to fight back. You just gotta experience being knocked to the ground and mauled, in first person.

And it goes on for a *really* uncomfortably long time.

Oh right I forgot my cd drive only operates via paperclip

some context for those who haven't read the Craft Sequence: ]

This is a world whose economy is partially built upon literal manifest gods, and partially built upon a magical capitalism (Craft) that's rapidly reshaping everything. Kai builds sub-sentient god-figures for the rich and powerful to use as financial instruments, and Teo is a potential client.

Also as a sidenote, Kai is my favorite trans character in fiction.

Okay so here's the scene from Full Fathom Five about creation myths that I've been talking about. It's so, so good.

@indi very kindly grabbed this scene from his ebook and took the extra step of editing out extraneous stuff and cutting it down to the main conversation.

Embrace the power of And. Material and non-material explanations for things are 100% non-exclusive. More than one thing can be true at a time.

"This isn't something humans are built to fully understand" is sometimes perfectly reasonable and useful theology, and sometimes a total cop-out.

And it can be hard to tell which is which.

Hm, just realized I've never seen a jellyfish 'sona. I want to see that now :)

Free Will doesn't exist because time is fake. Whatever. We have agency and subjectivity and those are way more important.

g'night.

some financial bullshit

I'm half-tempted to see if I can just immediately refinance with BECU, because they are decidedly not-shitty and I got the insurance check for the stolen car.

some financial bullshit

wtfff.

So when I was looking up the credit union the car dealership was offering a better loan with, I saw someone saying "hey it's $12 to make payments and that's bullshit". I asked the salesman about that, and he said "don't worry that's only for phone payments, it's free online".

Turns out the only free payments are for auto-pay. Everything else is $12. I don't want autopay since I plan on making more than minimum payments.

A commonly heard refrain in the let's play/instructional series I'm watching is "as we all know, trees are the real enemy."
