Meet the stoplight loosejaw! It's one of three species of fish (the other two are in the same family, Stomiidae, the dragonfishes) that can produce red bioluminescence; since red light from the sun doesn't penetrate to the depths the loosejaw lives in, its prey fish can't see it. So the stoplight loosejaw has an invisible flashlight for hunting.
Bonus: it's the only animal that uses chlorophyll, and it uses it to see the red light that it emits.

As a sidenote here, while discussing myths in terms of cultural/socialization utility (i.e. hey we have a myth to teach a lesson about how to behave) is sometimes an interesting lens, I find it *painfully* limiting when it's the only lens used. It's even worse when myths are framed as *only* existing for cultural utility.
Podcast recommendation: Spirits.
Two women share and discuss myths, usually while drinking.
I really like the way they come at mythology. They treat myths as living, and tend to center cultural and personal subjectivities.
