crow stuff

saw a crow fly past with a stick in its beak. I said "it's a bit late to build a nest, isn't it?" as it landed on the roof of a building nearby. "you're going to build a nest *there*?" and then I realized the crow was using the stick to dig through the gutters for bugtreats, and apologized for underestimating corvid intelligence, which I really should know better than to do. XD

I feel like therac-25 is particularly infamous but I'm curious if the danger of such things is explicitly taught.

Question for anyone who's gone through a university or technical school CS or related program (or whatever):

In any of your classes, was there ever a cautionary tale of software issues that could have life-threatening consequences? (Therac-25, multiple avionics control softwares, Toyota anti-lock brakes, 2003 northeast US blackout, etc?)

did u kno that vulpine club includes this http header in its responses

Written language is one of the coolest things we jank-ass apes have ever figured out how to do.

I try not to let on too much but uhh messaging for desired effect is actually something I spend a whole lot of time thinking about.

@starkatt @noelle
Seriously one of my favorite presentations of all time. :D

@noelle This is one of those videos I just keep coming back to and sharing every few years.

By the way, if you haven't seen Bobby McFerrin's two-minute - and almost wordless - presentation on the power of the pentatonic scale, drop what you're doing and watch it: youtube.com/watch?v=ne6tB2KiZu #music

Lol I shoulda bought Zoe Keating tickets like a month and a half ago instead of only checking now when the remaining tickets are aggressively terrible. Dangit.

A lot of the writing in Leverage is weird and hilarious in ways that I *think* are unintentional but it's hard to tell.

Watched the first two episodes of Leverage last night. Tipping point was seeing that there was a WisCon panel about it. It's entirely ridiculous but definitely fun.

Are foxes the prettiest animals? They very well might be.

If a page-turner about The First Female Airship Captain, war heroics, and people getting hit with cannonballs sounds fun, you'll probably like this book! If it doesn't, you probably won't!

It'd be easy to label this "steampunk" because airships, but I reject that.

It's not about wonderous technology made out of gears and brass. It's mid-19th-century warfare (bone saws included) that has the addition of smallish wood and helium airships that might break in half if you try and turn the rudder too hard.
